Places in Algeria
Algeria is a mountainous country, crossed by the high Atlas Mountains which divide Algeria from the Sahara Desert in the south. On the mountain slopes cedar and oak trees grow, sometime to gigantic size. Until the country was built up, the people were not able to make use of the wood of these trees because they had no good roads or railroads to carry the timber to the cities. Now roads and railroads have been built and it is a flourishing industry. Most of the rivers in the mountains are not very useful Places in Algeria.
The most important is the Cheliff, which is about 400 miles long and empties into the Mediterranean. In the rainy season, which is from October to March, it becomes swollen and dangerous as it rushes down from the mountains. In the center of Algeria there are also large marshes. Once it was very unhealthy to live near these, but the government has drained them and turned them into prosperous farmland where the Algerians can raise oranges, grapes, vegetables, and tobacco. In the south is the hot desert.
Places in Algeria : This is uninhabited and barren, except for spots, called oases, where there is water. Siome of these oases are natural springs, but many have been made by irrigation. More than 10,000 palm trees have been planted in these areas. It might be supposed that Algeria would have a hot climate because it is in Africa. However, because of the mountains, the climate varies a great deal. People living in the north have a comfortably warm climate like that of Florida. In the desert, south of the mountains, it is very hot. In the mountains themselves it is cool in summer, with severe winters.
